A playground for Wairau Hospital's children's ward is $8000 closer following a variety concert and charity auction in Blenheim on Saturday night. 24/7/2010

The Classic Hits Variety Concert included song, dance, illusions and live painting by young Marlborough artists at the Elim Centre.

Concert spokesman John Ealand said close to 300 people attended the event and $8000 was raised.

"It was absolutely awesome. One of the paintings done by the [Marlborough Boys' College] students went for $700. We had a real frenzy of bidding," Mr Ealand said.

"On behalf of the organisers I'd like to say thank you to the community for their support."

A further $3500 was still needed to make the playground a reality, Mr Ealand said.

Donations could be made at the Christian Book and Music Centre or PSIS, he said.
