Regular Farmers Market Winner .......Clara Van Wel
Clara van Wel has never been in love, but her performance of a self-penned song about it proved a winner at the inaugural Marlborough Got Talent show.
The 12-year-old beat 50 other under-17-year-olds to take the top spot at the show, held in the Marlborough Civic Theatre on Sunday.
Clara said yesterday she was "pretty thrilled" when she heard her name called out, particularly given the high calibre of the competition.
"I thought it could have gone any way. The violinist was fantastic ... I thought the judges did a really good job, because there was a big range of talent."
The Fairhall School pupil also had high praise for show organisers Robyn Simmons and Jeannie Mark.
Clara won with a performance of her own song, Crocodile Tears, which she said was about discovering the person you love is not being true to you. While she had never been in love, Clara said she had been inspired by the Twilight series of books.
The song is just one of 15 the talented singer, who also plays the guitar, has written.
A CD of her music, called Evolution, has also been produced.
Clara has performed publicly at a wedding and before a large audience in Singapore, as well as being a regular act at the Marlborough Farmers' Market.
She describes her style as alternative pop, a bit like Bic Runga, who she describes as her idol.
Clara said she eventually hopes to pursue a career as a professional singer or a journalist
